It's that time of year again - The Oxegen festival.

Every year, we get it slightly more right. I'm still looking for ideas though.

The biggest change this year of course is that I'm off coke (as in cola). If I manage to stay off coke until my birthday, which will be about 5.5 weeks cold turkey, (currently 3.5 weeks in), then I figure I'll apply that will power to smoking. So between that and my general healthier eating stance of late, I think I could do with some suggestions of food to bring. What food will last well over a 2 day period and tastes okay at room temperature?

Also think I need to buy a new tent. Firstly, because my old one is battered. But secondly, it has been hinted, strongly, that at the second festival of the season, I may well have a roommate.

Will I ever learn my lesson about jumping head-first into these things. Probably not. But then, I wouldn't be me if I did.

Anyone know what the deal is with this? What the hell makes it disposable? The fact that it's crap, or some inherent bio-degradable feature?

MDBs old boyfriend is home from Korea for a few weeks. I saw him in the pub last night. Walked out to the beer garden. MDB and her actual boyfriend were sitting outside, next to each other, occasionally holding hands. The ex-boyfriend was sitting on the other side of MDB. Looked, um, awkward. He had just shown up in the pub. She knew he was coming back from Korea at some point, but had expected a little more notice than that.

Woke at about 3:30am to a torrential downpour. Heard MDB coming home too. The girlie commented "That doesn't sound like $MDB's boyfriend." Indeed it was not. The ex hadn't actually noticed any of the hand holding. MDB and he had gone for a few pints and then back to our place for a can or two and apparently he was hoping to get a little something-something. Slim chances.

I always thought that she was the one who was hung up on him, but I really think at the end of the day, the fact that she was allowed him to conceal the fact that the opposite was true. My how the tables have turned.

None. A lot of them was at Roskilde, BTW. Didn't go see any of them, but Primal Scream got atrocious reviews.

As for the tent - it's polyurethane, so it's certainly not biodegradable. It's just dirt cheap.

You may be guaranteed that Primal Scream wouldn't have made the list.

Saw them in a small venue about two years ago. It was enjoyable enough but I can't see them managing a bigger crowd.

Disposable by jimgon (2.00 / 0) #5 Wed Jul 05, 2006 at 08:52:56 AM EST
It is disposable because it only costs 9.99.  Waste management is irrelevent.

I think you are correct by Cloaked User (2.00 / 0) #7 Wed Jul 05, 2006 at 11:31:47 AM EST
A judicious google found this page (the tent is number 3). Looks like it is indeed disposable in the sense that it's cheap:

Despite its name the manufacturer hopes 'you have many years enjoyment' with the tent.

Americanism by jimgon (2.00 / 0) #8 Wed Jul 05, 2006 at 11:35:07 AM EST
That's the American approach to consumerism.  If it's cheap it's disposable.

Coke/smoking by Dr Thrustgood (2.00 / 0) #9 Wed Jul 05, 2006 at 12:16:27 PM EST
Gave up coca-cola a while back. Then, about three weeks later, I had a massive craving for one. Went to shop, paid, downed, thought "This really tastes of shite" and didn't finish.

No cigarette has ever let me down like that.

The Go! Team by MrPlough (2.00 / 0) #11 Thu Jul 06, 2006 at 05:51:23 AM EST
Saw them in Edinburgh earlier this year. Sounded like they hadn't been playing together very long - not very tight. And there was a rapper girl wailing over the tunes a lot. Must have had good producers to get the album sounding like that (although it was still pretty lo-fi). Would be interested to see if they had improved.

I have no time for the Kaiser Chiefs, overrated samey nonsense.

I've seen Goldfrapp twice this year, once in Edinburgh while sitting down, the second at Sonar in Barcelona. Worth seeing, she can really sing and has excellent legs, um, stage presence, but ultimately I find the music throwaway.

My picks were the Eels, the Futureheads, Goldfrapp, Vitalic and Sigur Ros. I would recommend Jon Carter as a DJ, really good party music with lots of ragga influences, Cosmic Fury for the unpredictability and Who Made Who - probably well worth a look even though I only know one of their tracks. All in the Dance Arena.
No work.

Fantastic stage presence. by Evil Cloaked User (2.00 / 0) #12 Thu Jul 06, 2006 at 06:25:39 AM EST
Yes, caught Goldfrapp last year and would agree pretty much 100% with your assessment there. Shame about The Go! Team. I hope they've improved. I quite like the album.

Kaiser Chiefs can largely fuck off too. I saw them last year and thought "Oh, so this is next years 'The Killers'." And I was right.

In terms of my top pics, I'd largely agree with yours but I don't really know much Vitalic, though I like what I've heard, and I would add Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and only for the fact that they're on at 17:30 and are not really a daylight band, Placebo.

Dunno much about Clap Your Hands... by MrPlough (2.00 / 0) #13 Thu Jul 06, 2006 at 08:01:53 AM EST
But would probably go and see placebo if there was nothing else on. T in the park is on this weekend too, would love to go but too skint due to mortgage. Vitalic == bouncy pop techno, in a good way.
No work.
